Creative Stair Options for Your Deck

If you have a deck in the southern Minnesota, chances are you’re going to need steps. But stairs can be so much more than just something that gets you from one place to another. They give your deck character and personality, and they can even make it more functional! So let’s talk about some of the options we offer at Total Deck Solutions when it comes to designing stairs for your custom deck build.

Make Sure Your Steps Are The Proper Height

When it comes to the size of your steps, there are a few things you want to consider.

The riser height should be between 6 and 7 inches; the tread (step) should be at least 10 inches wide, but not more than 11 inches.

You can determine the number of steps you need by measuring the distance from the floor to your deck joists (the framing that supports an elevated platform). Then divide that number by 7 and you should get a whole number or a decimal. If you happen to get a decimal simply round down and you have the number of steps needed to complete your deck.

Straight Stairs

Straight stairs are the most common, and they’re a great way to save money on your deck project. You can build them yourself with just a few tools, or hire a contractor to do it for you.

Straight stairs are easy-to-use, durable and reliable no matter how many people use them at once—the only thing keeping them from being perfect is their tendency to get dirty quickly (if you’re worried about that, consider cleaning with pressure washers). They’re also incredibly easy to maintain depending on the materials used in its build.

Spiral Stairs

If you’re looking to get up a steep incline, or if you have a second story deck and want to create a path from the main level to that elevated space, then a spiral stair could be the perfect option for your design. Spiral stairs can be used in tight corners of decks that normally aren’t utilized as they take up less room than traditional straight staircases. This can leave your deck open to different design layouts and outdoor furniture possibilities.

Angled Stairs

Angled or geometric stairs can be an interesting way to utilize space, create visual drama and help with creating flow from the deck to the yard. If you have a small area for your patio or deck, this option can maximize your space. The stair design can be an accent piece in your backyard, drawing attention to itself and making it stand out among other features in your yard. You may want to consider how your landscaping can tie into your decks stairs to create a welcoming entrance to your backyard entertainment space.

To add safety and ambience, lighting is a great option for your stairs. Lighting can be added to the stairs themselves to help people see where they are going, or you can add lighting to the deck railing that will illuminate the stairs when it gets dark outside.

If you are installing new steps on your deck and would like them to have step lights built into them, then we do recommend using LED lights because they last longer than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs and use less energy. We can even install lighting that can change colors for the different seasons or holidays so you can enjoy the outdoors in style.
